  17. <p>     Iranian President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the
  18. powerful Shi`ite literary critic who upheld a death sentence
  19. against Salman Rushdie for The Satanic Verses, wants to be a
  20. best-selling author himself. Rafsanjani's co-author is offering
  21. the 400-page manuscript for Our Revolution: The Ideology Behind
  22. the Movement to U.S. publishing houses. Excerpts from the work
  23. show that the Ayatullah Khomeini's political heir still has a
  24. jaundiced view of the Great Satan. "Our real desire, from the
  25. beginning, was to humiliate the United States throughout the
  26. world," writes Rafsanjani. Moreover, Westerners "are members of
  27. the school of pleasure-seeking, lasciviousness, enjoyment and
  28. entertainment...[caught in] the fetid, slimy bed of lust
  29. and pleasure." Showing some worldliness himself, Rafsanjani is
  30. offering to provide rare family snapshots and even "unpublished"
  31. photographs of the American hostages held for 444 days in Iran
  32. to anyone who snaps up his book.
